What's a Crime?

Criminal acts include battery, robbery, burglary, murder, theft, or financial fraud.

Although an individual victim may be called the "complaining witness", society is considered to be the indirect target. Government prosecutors bring charges and in addition to fines or restitution for some crimes, probation or jail time may be involved at sentencing. Some victims may bring a civil suit for money damages after the conclusion of the criminal case. Insurance does not cover crimes as they are intentional bad acts.
